Of course you know about the lake. But have you gotten to know the countless alpine lakes and rivers, swimming holes and fishing spots that dot the surrounding mountains? While you won’t find sprawling beaches or speedboats here, you will be able to enjoy solitude and frigid water from a sun-drenched seat in the grass.

Most of the best river and lake spots around Lake Tahoe require some hiking or biking to find ’em. Ones that are better yet, you’ll have to find on your own. But good never comes easy, and we promise that these alpine river and lake destinations are well worth the effort.
