HomeBlog48 Hours in Pet-Friendly Tahoe City With Your Dog

If you’re planning a dog-friendly Lake Tahoe trip, Tahoe City might just be your spot. As the north shore’s most walkable town, it’s quietly one of the best places in the entire basin to spend a weekend with your dog.

Tahoe City is small enough to get around on foot, generous with its pet-friendly hotels, restaurant patios, parks and trails, plus right at the junction of the Truckee River and the lake. For a quick weekend trip with your four-legged companion, it’s kind of perfect.

This 48-hour guide is built around staying at evo Hotel—one of our favorite pet-friendly hotels, with its premium location and mellow vibes—and spending two days covering the best Tahoe City has to offer, for you and your pet.

Where To Stay: evo Hotel Tahoe City

Pet policy:

  • Pet fee: $25/night per dog
  • Dogs must be 50 lbs and under
  • Multiple dogs, and all breeds welcome
  • Dogs welcome throughout the hotel
  • Address: 455 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145

When pets are treated like guests, you’re alright in our book. And that ethos is exactly what landed evo Hotel Tahoe City as the anchor of this itinerary. Curated by iconic pro snowboarder and Tahoe local Jeremy Jones, evo is all about outdoors culture—and knows that your pet is an essential part of it.

The hotel itself is a stylish, boutique property with a year-round sauna and cold plunge, a firepit terrace with views of Lake Tahoe, gear rentals and demos from evo’s outdoor shop, complimentary WiFi and ample gear storage.

Rooms here are simple but comfortable, with inviting common spaces that drive a community feel. Most importantly, dogs are welcome throughout the property—so you can enjoy happy hour at the on-site Sierra Surf Club restaurant and bar, or a sunset over the lake alongside your furry bestie.

The location is unbeatable. Directly across the street from Commons Beach—with its summertime, free concerts and farmers market—plus a 5-10 minute walk from local, favorite restaurants and the Truckee River bike trail.

Pet-friendly tip: Opt for a patio room along the golf course and your pup will gain mega-easy access to green spaces.

Best for: Adventure-minded dog owners who want a modern, affordable and centrally located base with lake views, great amenities, and a flat pet fee regardless of breed or size.

Day 1

Morning: Breakfast at The Dam Cafe

Your pup is ready for a walk, and you’re ready for coffee, so day one starts with breakfast at The Dam Cafe. Perfect at the edge of Fanny Bridge, it’s perfect for loaded breakfast sandwiches, organic espresso on the pet-friendly patio and peaceful, river views while you enjoy it all.

It’s a counter-service, order-and-go setup, perfect for fueling up before hitting the trail—which conveniently begins another block or so down the road. Grab a smoothie to-go, or lock in a table for a leisurely morning on the patio.

  • Hours: Daily 7am–1pm
  • Address: 55 W Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145
  • Dog-friendly: Outdoor seating

Mid-Morning: Truckee River Bike Trail

Your breakfast stop sits at the start of the Tahoe City Multi-Use Trail (formerly the Truckee River Bike Trail), which is exactly where you and Fido are headed next. This paved, relatively flat trail follows the Truckee River as it winds away from the lake through the forest. It’s a mellow, easy dog walk and the river access is unbeatable. Leashed dogs are welcome the entire length.

The full trail runs about 10 miles one-way toward Truckee, but most people do a 2–4 mile out-and-back along the most scenic riverfront section. Your dog will be in heaven, with river dips at every turn, wildlife smells, shade under the pine trees, and zero car traffic.

The trail is accessible directly from the hotel. Walk west on N Lake Blvd, cross the river at the Fanny Bridge, and you’re on it.

  • Trail access: Tahoe City, CA. Trail behins near the junction of Hwy 89 and Hwy 28.
  • Dog policy: Leash required. 6-foot maximum.
  • Fee: Free

Lunch: Tahoe Tap Haus

After the trail, head to Tahoe Tap Haus for lunch on their dog-friendly patio. Just a two-minute walk from evo Hotel, Tahoe Tap Haus is one of Tahoe City’s best casual lunch spots and one of the few places in town where the dog-friendly patio comes with peek-through lake views.

Of course, what’s going on outside takes a back seat to what’s happening behind the kitchen doors. With 16 rotating taps, plus a fun menu of elevated California pub fare, it’s much more than just a pet-friendly patio. Choose from creative burgers, naanwiches, fish and chips, seasonal specials, and house-made potato chips, plus, a dog menu for your pup.

The patio faces the lake and gets the afternoon sun—perfect for a post-hike lunch with a cold local beer and your dog stretched out under the table. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3–6pm if you want to plan around it.

Pro tip: Get the wings with mean green sauce! Herby, spicy and the perfect pairing with a local brew. For true spice lovers, the atomic sauce is another elite choice.

  • Hours: Mon–Thu 11:30am–9pm / Fri 11:30am–10pm / Sat 11am–10pm / Sun 11am–9pm
  • Address: 475 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145 (across from Commons Beach)
  • Phone: (530) 584-2886
  • Dog-friendly: Patio only

After Lunch: Scraps Dog Bakery

Right next to Tahoe Tap Haus, you’ll find Scraps Dog Bakery. Scraps is a full-service dog and cat specialty shop that’s been a Tahoe City institution for nearly 20 years, and it carries all measure of dog foods, treats, chews, toys, collars, harnesses and beds.

Of course, you can also grab a bag of their in-store baked cookies, made with wholesome ingredients. It’s one of those shops where your dog will immediately try to drag you inside — and honestly, let them.

  • Hours: Mon–Sat 11am-5pm
  • Address: 475 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145 (next to Tahoe Tap Haus)
  • Dog-friendly: Yep. Dogs welcome (almost more than humans)

Afternoon Stroll: Commons Beach or Patton Landing

A picture of Commons Beach in Tahoe City, with the playground, grassy park and beach in the background

Walk off lunch—and score some seriously perfect lake views—with a cruise along the lakeside path that runs from Commons Beach up to the Tahoe State Recreation Area. Directly across from evo Hotel & Tahoe Tap Haus, it’s the perfect anytime loop with your pup. The beach itself doesn’t allow dogs, but the grassy park area surrounding it does, as does the trail between the two spots.

Or, head up the road to Patton Landing, where you can get your dog a rare, permitted swim in the pure waters of Lake Tahoe. This rocky section of beach, tucked next to Gar Woods, is one of the only places on the north shore where your pups allowed on the beach. Head the eastern edge and keep your dog on a leash if they’re not in the water.

Commons Beach:

Patton Landing:

Pro tip: If you’re looking for the very most dog-friendly Lake Tahoe beaches, check out Kiva Beach in South Lake Tahoe or Nevada Beach near Zephyr Cove. Both have designated dog areas that your pup will love.

Evening: Dinner & Drinks at Sierra Surf Club

Dinner at your hotel is always a superior move. And the Sierra Surf Club restaurant on the evo Hotel campus is truly elite.

Far beyond your typical hotel restaurant, Sierra Surf Club is a standout all on its own. The menu is wildly creative, with birria rangoons, Thai-inspired bowls, poutine, an elevated hot dog, plus fun cocktails and a local tap menu.

The food is great—but the vibe is even better. Inside, funky, adventure-inspired decor tells the Protect Our Winters story, with a warm, inviting bar that seems to fill with locals on any given night. Grab live music inside or head to the outdoor patio to gather around a fire pit, watch the sunset over the lake and of course, snag some pet-friendly seating.

  • Hours: Mon–Fri 7:00am–8pm / Sat-Sun 7:00am-9pm
  • Address: 425 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145
  • Phone: (530) 208-0090
  • Dog-friendly: Patio only

Day 2

Morning: Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet

On day two, we’re heading out for a little local exploration. It begins with a stop at Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet—the most beloved bakery on the north shore and one of those places locals insist every visitor has to experience.

Family-owned and operated since 1977, Tahoe House starts baking pastries at 2am daily. By the time you arrive, the fresh-baked apple strudels, croissants, danishes and muffins that many label the best baked goods in Tahoe fill the tiny cafe.

The coffee is locally roasted and brewed to order through Swiss machines, with over-the-top favorites like white chocolate mochas and caramel lattes on the menu. Beyond the pastries, the bakery also sells deli sandwiches, chicken pot pies, soups, gourmet cheeses, wines, and sauces, making it a great stop for grabbing picnic supplies before a hike.

The outdoor area is explicitly pet-friendly. Perfect for sampling one of everything with your pup at your feet, before hitting the trail.

Pro tip: This place gets busy, especially on weekends. Arrive early, but also know that the line moves fast. Whatever you do—grab an extra pastry or two for the road.

  • Hours: Daily 6am–3pm (Fri–Sat until 6pm)
  • Address: 625 W Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145
  • Phone: (530) 583-1377
  • Dog-friendly: Outdoor seating area

Mid-Morning Adventure: Float the Truckee River or Hike Sugar Pine Point State Park

Option A–Float the Truckee River

We’ll say it—the Truckee River float is the best pet-friendly activity in Tahoe City (and possibly on the entire north shore). Two operators run self-guided 5-mile raft trips from Tahoe City to River Ranch: Truckee River Rafting (175 River Rd) and Truckee River Raft Company (next door). Both welcome dogs, but with one key difference worth knowing before you book.

Truckee River Rafting allows leashed dogs up to 50 lbs—great for smaller and medium breeds. Truckee River Raft Company welcomes dogs of all sizes with no weight restriction—the pick for large breed owners. Both floats take 2–3 hours, feature mellow, Class I rapids, with swimming holes along the way where your dog can jump in, and quiet gravel banks to pull over for a picnic.

Bring a cooler with snacks and drinks (no glass or Styrofoam), sunscreen, and a dog life jacket.

Pro tip: You can also raft the Truckee River as a free, DIY adventure. We detail everything there is to know about the float here. →

River rafting on the truckee river

Let’s go! The ultimate Lake Tahoe summer activity awaits with Truckee River Raft Company. Time to get your river float on the schedule!

Option B—Hike Sugar Pine Point State Park

About 10 miles south of Tahoe City on Highway 89, Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park is one of the most beautiful state parks on the west shore—2,000 acres of pine, fir, aspen, and juniper with nearly two miles of lake frontage.

While dogs are only allowed on paved roads and trails, developed picnic areas, campsites, and the General Creek Fire Road during summer, there’s still tons to explore here.

You’ll have to keep your pup off unpaved or natural-surface trails, and no hitting the beach—but the quarter-mile Lakefront Interpretive Trail along the shoreline is paved and explicitly dog-friendly. The General Creek Fire Road is a wider, more expansive option for dogs who need a longer stretch, and the historic Hellman-Ehrman Mansion is accessible from the parking area and worth a look.

  • Address: 7360 W Lake Blvd, Tahoma, CA 96142
  • Dog policy: Leash required. Paved roads/trails and General Creek Fire Road only. No unpaved trails, no beach.
  • Fee: $10 day use

Lunch: River Ranch Lodge (Rafting Option) or Mountain Slice Pizzeria (Hiking Option)

If you went rafting — River Ranch Lodge

Not only is the River Ranch Lodge the convenient ending point of your raft trip, but it’s a Tahoe City, summertime staple. The riverfront, pet-friendly patio overlooks the Truckee River, with live music on summer afternoons and a BBQ patio menu that hits the mark after a few hours on the water. Burgers, wings, sandwiches, salads, cold beer.

Important note: River Ranch is only open for lunch on weekends (Saturday and Sunday from 8am). On weekdays, the restaurant opens at 3pm, so if you’re rafting on a weekday, plan lunch elsewhere or grab something from the Tahoe House Bakery stash you brought along.

  • Hours: Mon–Fri 3pm–9pm / Sat–Sun 8am–9pm
  • Address: 2285 River Rd, Tahoe City, CA 96145
  • Phone: (530) 583-4264
  • Dog-friendly: Outdoor patio

If you went hiking — Mountain Slice Pizzeria & Creamery

Post-hike, but really, post-anything, (because it’s that good) Mountain Slice is the move. Founded in 2017 by a New Jersey transplant who knew Lake Tahoe was missing real East Coast pizza, Mountain Slice does truly proper pizza. Creative New York-style by the slice and whole pies, plus Detroit-style pizzas, craft beers, wines, and a full menu of ice cream.

We—like everyone else—love the banana chocolate chip ice cream, and basically anything sold as a classic NY slice. There’s no delivery, limited seating, and they close when the dough runs out, so don’t wait!

Pet-friendly tip: Order the Man’s Best Friend to make your pup’s day. A dog-friendly recipe, with no seasonings and plenty of meat, it’s the perfect snack to share with your pup.

  • Hours: Daily 12pm–8pm (closed Tuesday/Wednesday per latest info — verify before going)
  • Address: 690 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145
  • Phone: (530) 583-0000
  • Dog-friendly: Outdoor seating available

Dinner: Tahoe National Brewing Company

End the weekend at Tahoe National Brewing Company. A rare find around the Lake Tahoe, this lakefront brewery is made better by a dog-friendly patio, scratch kitchen, and tasty, brewed on-site beers.

It’s the kind of place you can keep coming back to. Apart from the chill, down-to-earth vibe, the kitchen turns out a sesasonal, rotating food menu, and the small-batch brewery promises both new styles and old favorites. Most importantly, the patio is the dream locale for one final Tahoe City evening with your dog stretched out at your feet.

  • Hours: Wed–Sun 11am–11pm (closed Mon–Tue)
  • Address: 850 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA 96145
  • Phone: (530) 213-3505
  • Dog-friendly: Patio seating

Planning Your Tahoe City Dog-Friendly Weekend

Getting there: Tahoe City is about 45 minutes from South Lake Tahoe via Hwy 89, 2 hours from San Francisco via I-80 to Truckee, then south on Hwy 267, or 45 minutes from Reno via Hwy 395 to I-80 west.

Best time to visit: Late June through September for the full outdoor experience. Tahoe City is also excellent in fall, with fewer crowds, but access to hiking, biking and fall colors along the Truckee River trail.

What to pack: Water bowl and collapsible travel bottle (some trails have no water access), 6-foot leash (required everywhere on this itinerary), doggy waste bags, and a dog life jacket if you plan to get on the water.
